And yet another book to read- sigh -.-

I decided to read the book Fahrenheit 451 mainly because my friend was reading it and I thought that it was better than reading no independent reading book. If your confused why the author Ray Bradbury made the book title fahrenheit 451, it is because paper burns at that temperature. As usual I pick another book that is completely weird...I dont get this book either....WHY ME!!!!! Yeah, so its about a dude whos name is Guy Montage and he is a fireman. Normally fireman are supposed to put out fires but in this deminsion, a fireman's job is to start fires....ugh....I don't get it. I read like over a 100 pages of the book and all, but all the stuff they write is of one moment which is expanded to like a page..it's really boring. Like all the other books I read the book wasn't going anywhere--probably just in the beginning. Luckily the book might get interesting...and when it does I will write something of more meaning. One that has happened so far is that Guy has made friends with this seventeen year old girl who's name is Clarisse. She's young for her age but acts older than it and sometimes immature. Somehow, when I read the book its sounds as if it takes place in the future...seriously I don't know but it sounds like it.

The end of the book-pages 300-500

Technically, I was supposed to read 100 pages per week but the suspense was killing me so I read an extra hundred. In these pages a lot of things happen. Education was held high in the family. Education meant power. It was something that the Nolan family needed so they could rise and become wealthy. Throughout most of the story the Nolan family was poor, but when Neeley and Francie were properly educated all their money worries were handled. Francie was working as an editor in a newspaper company(I forgot the name) making 20 dollars per week, and Neeley was working various low paying jobs making 5 -10 dollars per week. Before the children got their working papers, Johnny Nolan (their father) died of pnemonia. Also their mother got pregnant with another baby before Johnny died, but they didn't have to worry about making ends meet with Francie's income. Also Sissy, who is Francie's aunt got married and "had a baby". This baby wasn't obviously her's because she had a steak of having miscarriages - 11 to be exact. She sort of adopted the baby and proclaimed that it was her own baby even though her belly was as flat as a pancake. Later on, Katie remarries to McShane, who is this police sergeant who makes 10,000 dollars per year. This meant that once the Nolans were very poor making a couple of dollars a day and in the futrue they were one of the riches families in Brooklyn.

Chapters 8-14...a brief description

The book "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" is a book of survival. Every single chapter describes how the Nolan family sustains themselves with just 30 cents a day....oh yea this story takes place in the early 1900s, but still back then 30 cents was very little. Everything they eat is incorperated with bread and cheap spices. They mainly drink cofee which is dominantly mixed with water. Katie Nolan (the mom) has an ambition to save up 50 dollars by sparing 5 cents each day into a can placed into the darkest corner of their closet. The Nolan family are suffering because they really want to buy a home for themselves, so at least their children can inherit it and live a better life with less obligations. This was an ambition that Katie's mother Mary had. Unfortunatly, after saving 50 dollars each time, she was tricked because she couldn't read or write English. Every single generation of their family has been working or living in the house/land of another; they were never rich enough to rise to anything...that is why they came to America so they have a chance for their children's sake. Luckily Katie can speak English and write it. When Katie gave birth to a daughter (Francie), Katie's mom told her that she must be properly educated to live a successful live in America. So every single day, Katie read Francie a page from the Bible and a page from Shakespeare. And every single day, their father Johnny works less and drinks more.

Character Profile

Mary Frances Nolan or Francie Nolan is the protagonist of the novel. Francie is the daughter of second-generation Americans living in Brooklyn, New York in the early twentieth century. She is named after her father's dead brother's fiancée. Francie's family is very poor, but she is very smart, observant, and content by the wonders of the world. She is a combination of her hard-working, practical mother and her imaginative, dreaming father. She is happy with what she has and doesn't resent life, but takes into account of what she has. Since she didn't grow up with luxury, and sometimes without friends, she loves to read, and creates new worlds through her writing.

A Tree Grow In Brooklyn

After I read Catcher in the Rye, I decided to read A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, The story starts off by describing a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, called Williamsburg. They talk about a tree that grows throughout the neighborhood. The tree is called the Tree of Heaven because it grows wherever its seeds land. One also grows in the tenement districts, where the poor people like Francie Nolan live. It was Saturday, and as usual she went to take a trip to the junkie. The junkie pays the neighborhood kids pennies for scrapes of metal they give him. Afterwards, they go to Cheap Charlies , which is a penny candy store. They use the pennys to draw for prizes. A first when Iheard they were poor, I ddn't think they were this poor...but after eading it some more, I knew they were really poor. I feel sorry for the family because there doesn't seem to be any hope that they will get rich. They had to buy stale bread and couldn't buy expensive things at all, they could only buy the bare necessities. Also I could tell they were poor because the occupation of the mom wasn't the best payed (she made a living by scrubbing floors) and the father has a drinking problem.

The last few chapters of Catcher in the Rye---YEAH!!!!

Well, last timeI was telling you all about how Holden crashed at his old English teacher's house. Now if you remember the teachers name was Mr. Antolini. He seems like a nice guy and everything in the beginning, but later on he does some perverted stuff to Holden...thats what Holden thinks not me. When he was going to sleep he had no pajamas, so instead he was sleeping with these really short shorts. He finally falls asleep. After a couple of hours he feels a hand that was petting him/ patting him..it freaked Holden out a lot. Holden felt very violated and discovers that the person petting him was .....Mr. Antolini. I find it kind of weird.. why does he pet Holden? When Holden asked him what the hell he was doing, Mr. Antolini got all guilty and acted strange. Anyways, Holden leaves as fast as possible, pretending he had to get bags urgently. SO he leaves, and get his stuff and he starts getting all depressed again..I wouldn't blame him..he was sleeping in a freakin train station. He comes up with yet another ridiculous scheme about himself oving west by hitch-hiking. He would pretend to be deaf and mute to avoid having conversations with any body evey again and decides to marry a mute and deaf person. He decides to tell Pheobe (his sister) that he is leaving to go west. Pheobe gets all heart-broke and everything and tells him that she is coming with him. He tells her to shut-up repeatedly..they become mad at each other. Later on, they make up..and he decides not to leave but to just go back home. Then Holden says he doesn't feel like talking about his personal life anymore beacause he is getting sick of remembering it because he misses all the bastards like Ackley and Stradlater..he even misses Maurice

Fourth post --almost end of the story

I recall many times when Holden asked several cab drivers if they knew were the ducks in a small lake in Central Park went. All them were baffled by this question. Some didn't answer.. some people thought that Holden was retarded for askin this question. One guy was like Mother Earth cares for them when it get cold---what the hell is that supposed to mean. He makes an analogy with fish in the lake. When it gets cold, they are frozen in the lake.. then Holden asks what about the ducks do they stay frozen in the lake too? Then he goes back to analogy about the fishes-- that they can "survive" in the ice because there are pores or something in the ice which brings food to the fish. I thought that cab driver was crazy or something. You might be thinking were I'm going with this story, but what happens in the end of the story is that finally Holden decides to go to that lake were he spent a good time of his childhood. When he finally arrives to the lake, he discovers that the ducks were nowhere to be found. He keeps reminiscing about the ducks and the time he spent with his sister Phoebe and his cousin Allie...thenhe feels very homesick and decides to go meet his sister. He didnt care if he was caught out of Pencey. He really wanted to see his sister; they had a special bond they really understood what each other was talking about. After they talked and everything, Phoebe instantly discovereed that her brother was suspended from Pencey. I was amazed by how she knew that so fast without him even giving her a clue. His parents arrived home and he was almost caught but luckily he left in time. He decided to live with his English teacher, Mr Antolini for a couple of weeks. Holden apparently has only good connections with his English teachers because English is the only class he hasn't flunked.

The Catcher in the Rye- Chapter 7 - 16 brief description

Since Holden is failing every class except English and is going to be expelled from Pency. Instead of being kicked out of Pencey he decided that he was going to leave right that instant. This was after Stadlater and Holden got into a fight for no apparent reason (fight was over nothing, was pointless). He didn't want to hang out there anymore. Since Holden had left Pencey, he grew more and more depressed. He kept meeting people he knew but it made him feel even more depressed when he was trying to make himself feel better. All his friends had changed, and according to him had become greater phonies. He keeps talking about Jane Gallagher when he gets depressed. It was one of his best friends who wasn't a phony. One time while stay at a hotel, Holden was taking an elevator to his room, and the elevator boy who's name was Maurice. Maurice hooked Holden with a hooker (Holden is 12 but he looks like he's 22). Maurice says it will cost 5 dollars and Holden agrees. The prostitutes name was Sunny-- when she did come, Holden didn't feel like having sex with a stranger. Sunny was frustrated because she woke up late and didn't do anything. Holden gives her 5 dollars and she leaves. Holden gets bummed out and tries to go to sleep. All of a sudden he hears someone knock on his door a couple of hours later. Automatically, Holden knew who it was. It was Maurice and Sunny. Maurice tells him that he was supposed to pay 10 dollars. Holden keep refusing and tells him that he said 5 dollars before. Sunny find his wallet and takes out another 5 dollars and tells Maurice that she had the money and that they could leave. Maurice started to act like a bastard and doesn't leave Holden alone even after they got the 5 dollars. Maurice beats him up severely and they leave the room.

The Catcher in the Rye

Well what happened was that I couldn't get "Howl's Moving Castle" so instead I took out the book "The Catcher in the Rye". It is an ok book and all, but the story is going nowhere in the first four chapters. Also the book uses a repitition of the words chrissake, goddam, hell and many other phrases a lot, so the story gets sort of redundant and boring. It seems as if so far that 16 year old Holden Caulfield isn't the best student at Pency because he is failing every single class besides English but he might change and become a better student later. So far the story is boring, but since its the beginning of this book, I guess it could get better. The plot needs to be more interesting in the beginning. It doesn't make me feel like reading it. He's talking about his whole life story......

Howl's Moving Castle

I picked the book Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. I chose to read this book because my brother read it and recommended it to me. I expect to get out of this book an interesting life lesson and a moral cleverly interwoven into the story's plot. I think after reading the summary that it's a humorous and puzzling tale of fantasy and adventure. Probably has a lot of drama -twists and turns throughout the story. I expect to finish this book in approximately 3 weeks because the book is 336 pages long.
Diana Wynne Jones was born on 1934 and I think she is still alive. Diana has been accepted to receive the prestigious Carnegie Award for children's books. Her book, Howl's moving Castle set a Japanese box office record and went straight to the top of the Japanese film charts on its release in November 20th , 2004. It won an award for Technical Achievement.
